    White Granite Semillon Vineyard

    The Vineyard

This south-facing was planted in 2004 on a pocket of white granite and sandstone soils. The 6000 vines/ha create a very good balance between the vines. It lies in a valley exposed to the sea breeze from the Atlantic Ocean which cools down the vineyard considerably during the summer months.

    Our Philosophy

Minimum intervention on the vineyard is necessary, the balance is very good and the grapes will be picked between 20 and 21 Balling to capture the nice fresh citrus character from the fruit. In the first year the wine will be lean and fresh and later it will mature into a concentrated, oily, complex wine with a good acidity and length.

    Kanniedood Chenin Blanc Vineyard

    The Vineyard

This north-east facing heritage vineyard on our family farm Canettevallei, was planted in 1985. This vineyard benefits a lot from the cool sea breeze from False Bay about 20kms away. The vineyard is planted on a sandy, loam topsoil with a gravel base which ensures little vegetative growth. Due to the poor soil and even with a very small crop every year, the balance in the vineyard is therefore always very good.

    Our Philosophy

The most important decision for the winemaker to take is the timing of the harvest, to capture the huge potential of these beautiful grapes. We have found that, when we pick very ripe, the expression of fruit is excellent. The wine will then have good enough structure to easily spend eight months in wooden barrels.

    Thomas se Dolland Pinotage Vineyard

    The Vineyard

This north-facing vineyard was named after Thomas who used to work in this vineyard with horse and plough during the 1950’s. Situated on a hill and planted in soil that is rich in clay, these dry land bushvines can survive the dry summer months in Stellenbosch.

    Our Philosophy

We want the vineyard to express its character in the wine. We look for elegance and freshness, and therefore we will pick at the right sugar levels to achieve these characteristics. The wine will be more feminine than masculine in style, displaying more of its ancestral Pinot Noir and Cinsault genes.

    Oukliprant Malbec Vineyard

    The Vineyard

The Malbec vineyard is planted on a granite and clay soil which has revealed hundreds of Stone Age artifacts over the years. The vineyard was named after this ancient piece of soil where native people have dwelled over 40 000 years ago. This east-facing Oukliprant Malbec vineyard benefits a lot from the cool Atlantic Sea breeze during summer.

    Our Philosophy

The leaves should be thinned out severely during the period of blooming in October. Sunlight exposure is very important on the Malbec grapes, because this results not only in a thicker skin but also very ripe tannins. Due to the cool climate, we can harvest very late at optimum ripeness of 14 degrees potential alcohol.

    Verlatenkloof Merlot Vineyards

    The Vineyard

The north-facing Verlatenkloof vineyard was planted in 1990 in a small, hidden valley near the Polkadraai Hills near Stellenbosch. This 4ha block of bushvines is planted on very deep loam soil with a layer of clay at the bottom. The clay provides very good water retention for the roots which helps the normally sensitive Merlot variety during the dry summer months.

    Our Philosophy

The old bushvines are in excellent balance at this stage. They yield a small crop and the berries are very tiny. The openness of the bushvines helps with exposure to light and there is no need for us to remove any leaves from around the bunches. The idea is to pick at full ripeness and to do a very long maceration in the cellar to maximize extraction, which provides lovely creaminess to the wine.

    Die Hang Sangiovese Vineyard

    The Vineyard

This vineyard was named ‘Die Hang’ which refers to the steep slopes it was planted against. Densely planted to 6000 vines/ha, there is good competition between the vines. This rivalry leads to less vegetative growth, resulting in excellent balance.

    Our Philosophy

What I learned in Tuscany is that if the balance is right in the vineyard, the work is already halfway done. The challenge is to determine when the right time to pick will be, the aromas must be optimal and the tannins should be perfectly ripe.

    Granietbult Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard

    The Vineyard

The name of this single vineyard originates from the south-facing hill it is planted on. The Cabernet clone 359 thrives in the granite soil which also contains a fair amount of clay. Deeper down in the subsoil, there is a layer of coffee stone agglomerates which provide excellent drainage for the vineyard.

    Our Philosophy

We don’t have to interfere much with nature, because this vineyard yields excellent fruit. We only remove some leaves around the bunches to maximize exposure to sunlight. This action ensures very ripe tannins by the time of harvesting. The moment of harvest is crucial and the grapes are tasted daily as harvest draws nearer. We harvest in two stages, the first stage when the fruit flavours are optimal and the second stage when the tannins are super ripe.
